Don’t trust everyone is a quote that repeatedly appears throughout the book The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. In the book the protagonist a clone named Matt faces this challenge everywhere he goes. Many things happen to him, and betrayal reoccurs even from his own creator. Nancy Farmer shows many characters true colors throughout the book with interesting techniques. In the book, it mentions scorpions a lot as a secret passageway by using your hand print but not just any hand print. The hand prints of Matt and El Patron. An example of this is “He pressed his hand against the wall and felt the same sensation of crawling ants. A second door slid open.” (Page 223). Another one is “Tam Lin says the scorpion recognizes the fingerprints and DNA of El Patron. And you’re a clone.” (Page 222) This creates the setting because it is not a common thing to have secret hand print doors in our present time. So this sets the setting in the future. The last example is “... they found themselves on the edge of the hovercraft landing field.” (Page 223). This creates the setting because in our time no one is arriving in a hovercraft from the sky that float. Most people arrive in cars that stay on the ground.
