Existentialism:

I was born on February 24, 1998. When I came into this life I already had four older brothers and a loving mother and father. Over the years I always had someone to look up to and admire as I continued to learn and grow. My brothers may not have always been the best examples in regards to the choices they made but they did their best to keep me on the right track for being the best person I could possibly be. Like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, they taught me to have fun with life and enjoy the little things before it was too late. The time, money and love that my brothers have sacrificed to make me happy is what has pushed me, and will continue to push me to make the most out of this short life for myself as well as for as many people as I possibly can before I go.

On a similar note, the friends that I have made have had a distinguishable effect on me, especially in these past four years. I have had the opportunity to share most, if not all of my free time with some amazing people. I can only imagine how difficult it is to have to care for a family of six boys considering how amazing of a job they did. Throughout my lifetime I have watched as my parents work night and day to not only provide for our needs but to also each and every one of our wants. They are the most diligent selfless people people I have ever seen and will continue to be for as long as they live. They have taught me what hard work is and what it means to make sacrifices for the well being of others. They have educated me on sharing and service and not by force, but by example. I am where I am right now because of the unconditional love that they have shown me, whether I deserved it or

The dichotomy of hero vs. villain is apparent throughout the story of Beowulf. Beowulf, being the hero of this book fights three villains, which are Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. Each of these fights Beowulf fought causes him to receive lavish gifts and recognition as a brave warrior, however once he was named king, his transition from warrior to king highlighted the dichotomy of heroic warrior and heroic king. Grendel, one of the villains in this book could be interpreted as sin, or evil, Grendel’s mom as revenge, and the dragon as mutual destruction or death. Explaining these three fights and what each meant to Beowulf, the hero vs. villains can be perceived.…

In the epic Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, the concept of simplistic duality is expressed quite frequently. However, the opposite can be observed in the movie Beowulf & Grendel, directed by Sturla Gunnarsson. In this day and age, where moviegoers want their films to mirror the original plot of their favorite novels, why would the director of Beowulf and Grendel decide to make such a deviation? The answer lies in our modern culture. Because our culture differs greatly than that of the Anglo-Saxons, the concept of simplistic duality has become atypical of today’s media.…

Beowulf’s Motivations There are a lot of questions many people may find themselves asking about why Beowulf does what he does. All living beings must face the inevitable fact that we all must die. In the poem, Beowulf, mortality plays an important part in many characters where they must confront an enemy that may lead to their death. The role of mortality is brought up of several times throughout the poem and some people argue that the characters are reminded of their mortality so they can preform as many deeds as they can so they be remembered by it. I argue that the characters are reminded of their mortality as a warning that there is always a stronger opponent out there and some day that opponent is going to be the one to end their lives. I argue this because you see characters like Grendel, Hrothgar, Beowulf and Beowulf’s men face their own mortality.…
