King Hrothgar and his men were happy and celebrating the earth when they disturbed a powerful monster living in the darkness named Grendel. Grendel, the son of Cain, the oldest son of Adam and Eve. Grendel didn’t like the people to be happy, them being loud and obnoxious doesn’t help either. One night when Grendel got tired of everything, he attacked as soon as darkness fell. He went to Herot Hall; snatched 30 men while they were sleeping and took them back to his lair, blood dripping behind him. He continued to attack every night, at nightfall. The hero chooses 14 of his mightiest and bravest men to set sail with him. He also knew exactly where he was going when he set sail for Hrothgar. Their travel was easy and smooth, and they made sure to give thanks to God as soon as their ship was landed on shore. As the men were preparing to travel to see Hrothgar, a watchman stopped them and questioned why they were traveling onto his territory without permission. Beowulf then explained that he was the Geats that follow Higlac, and that he was the son of a famous soldier Edgetho. The watchman, then guided them to Herot, when they arrived, they were called to see the King. “I drove five great giants into chains, chased all of that race from earth.” Beowulf stated. He had only one request, to have permission to defeat the demon everyone was afraid of, Grendel. After the King granted him permission, Beowulf and his men stayed inside of Herot.
