Formal Essay Number 1 In Veronica Stafford’s essay “Texting and Literacy” (found on page 115 in the textbook) she discusses how she thinks texting has doomed the future. She has noticed that at her school many of the students do not pay attention to each other as they walk down the halls between classes; instead of looking at everyone, and where they are going, they are texting. According to Ms. Stafford it is texting that causes students to be stupid and to get bad grades. However this is “choppy thinking” as she herself states. According to Ms. Stafford’s essay over seventy-five and a half million texts are sent per day, and 54% of those who text sending more than five texts a day. This is not so bad when you consider that there are over 300 million people in America alone and for most people it is impossible to have a conversation with each person only saying one sentence. She also believes that grammar and academic papers suffer due to texting. She uses the example of a thirteen year girl from Scotland who says, in an essay about what she did over the summer, “My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4 we used 2 go 2 NY 2C my bro, & 3 kids FTF ILNY, its gr8…” What she provides as evidence about why we should not text is only a single extreme example of one person who turned in a bad essay.
