They stand in the center of the photo drawing attention to their movement and power that they are putting towards the raising. Those lunging as they force the flag into the ground, show force and strength. This force and strength is what allowed the US troops to fight against the Japanese military and eventually overcome their power. In this case, the main object that is emphasized is the American flag. Not only does the flag catch the viewer’s eye because it is an iconic and familiar image that is easily recognizable against the drab background. Also, the flag stands out because of the movement from throughout the picture that draws the eye towards it. The flag pole draws the eye up from the soldiers to the flag. Also, the flag pole lengthens the photo from the crowded lower half of the photo, drawing it away and creating a frame of the simple background. The emphasis of the flag creates the sense of patriotism. It shows that through the pain of the war, the United States was able overcome the challenges and difficulties of World War II. We were able to complete what we set out to do: win the war as the United States of America, and for the freedom of those we were fighting
