There is a huge problem in the NFL. Viewership is down. There is no one single reason why viewership is down, there are variety of reasons as to why; quality of play is down, off the field issues, declining cable subscriptions, over saturation and other viewing options. These issues are complicated and there is no easy solution that will solve any of these issues. The easiest to fix is bringing up the quality of play. Again, there are many reasons as to why quality of play is down and some are complicated, but many are simple and would significantly improve level of play. One simple change that would significantly improve quality of play is changing the pass-interference rule. Pass interference is is a foul that occurs when a player interferes with an eligible receiver's ability to make a fair attempt to catch a forward pass. The penalty is overcalled, abused by teams and has negatively influenced the outcomes of many games. This year has been especially bad.

The NFL rulebook states that interference should only called when a player “significantly hinders the progress of an eligible player of such player’s opportunity to catch the ball and there no interference if the pass is “clearly uncatchable.” Following these guidelines would reduce the amount of questionable calls on plays where very little contact occurs and a flag is still thrown. Now, enforcing these rules are difficult, often times referees do not have the greatest view of plays in question and the rule is pretty vague. These guidelines are interpreted differently be referred and people in general.
