In 2015, a research was done by Boston University and the U.S. department of Veterans Affairs to show the amount of retired players affected by concussions.. The research done on the deceased players proved, “...87 out of 91 ex-NFL players tested positive for brain disease linked to head trauma.” (Dias Jr.). This research shows that concussions end up affecting most players for the rest of their lives. These players lives were at risk due to the lack of safety protocols that were in place when they played. Just a couple of years ago, “...the NFL agreed to a $765 million settlement with 18,000 retired players who had suffered from head injuries.”(Dias Jr.). The backstory on the lawsuit was that the NFL had been concealing information on concussions. The information had been linked to concussions causing neurological disorders to the players. The league's lack of interest in the players has led to many players having difficulty in their everyday lives after retirement.
