The benefits that come from playing a sport like are astounding. The extra muscles, the increase in stamina and strength as well as the development of leadership and sportsmanship skills is enough to make any sports fan enjoy the physical activities. Yet with the rise in attention regarding the potential life threatening injuries most football players sustain from the play the field, it brings up the questions many sports fans, and concerned football moms, often ask themselves: is football too dangerous of a sport. All sports come with some bruises from time to time. However, in the case of football, these bruises are too severe to simply ignore. The lack of rules is one of the many reasons these bruises occur. Football players can still provide great entertainment for watchers while avoiding head on collisions and kickoffs in the game (Banks 606). Just having these risky methods of winning a game puts all players at high risks of getting injuries. Using more safety rules, along with better equipment, and more awareness of safety hazards of participating in football could help lower to number of life threatening injuries. Having an insufficient number of rules for the game makes football dangerous. Within the years 1959 and 1988, a study conducted by observing 3,400 NFL players revealed that football players were four times more likely to develop diseases than the rest of population (Burleigh 611). This claim can further be supported by the reports written on other players as well. There have been former NFL players in the past that have suffered through the aftereffects of one too many rough seasons. Some like O. J. Murdock, a former wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans, have committed suicide from the brain injuries that developed with each collision to the head (Burleigh 611).
