The reason why Iago does this is a shadowed mystery. In the beginning of the play Iago tells Roderigo that “In following him, I follow but myself; heaven is my judge, not I for love and duty, But seeming so, for my peculiar end” (1.1.60-62) Iago doesn’t follow Othello because of love or because of honor he follows Iago for his own reasons. Iago is following Othello to destroy him. He is willing to go to Cyprus in order to destroy Othello and he is willing to kill to make sure that Othello is destroyed. We never learn why Othello has incurred the wrath of Iago but Iago’s hate for Othello is as venomous a snake’s poison. The people that Iago manipulates to get to Othello are all had by his false love and no one figures out what is …show more content…
Cassio never flinches from duty until Iago appears and begins to warp Cassio. We read in the beginning of Othello that Iago doesn’t believe that Cassio is fit for the role of lieutenant. Iago says to Roderigo (Cassio) “Never set a squadron in the field, nor the division of a battle knows” (1.1.19-20). Iago know that if he want’s to get into striking range of Othello he’ll need to remove Cassio from his position of Lieutenant. so he waits for when Cassio is weak to strike .Iago takes advantage of Cassio’s weakened state one night to start his destruction of Othello. Othello puts a lot of trust into Iago and in the play we see a sense of need for Iago. The way that Othello holds Iago close to him in the play reminds me of a king and his royal advisor. Othello asks Iago everything about what he thinks could be going on in between Cassio and Desdemona that he lowers his safe guards and blindly accepts all that Iago tells him. Iago plants inside Othello’s mind Desdemona’s unfaithfulness. When Iago is alone with Othello he tells Othello about his concerns about Cassio and Desdemona together and tells Othello “O, beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on; that cuckold lives in bliss.” (3.3.1816-18) Iago implies that Cassio is having an affair with Desdemona and this glimpse of the hate is what Iago has held up inside him. When I watched the movie Othello, when Iago tells Othello about how Desdemona is unfaithful I saw a glimpse of savage joy as Othello fell to the ground and writhed in sorrow. Iago loves the pain that he put Othello into and savors what he’s done to him. As I said before Othello believes that Iago is, trying to tell him about what is wrong from Iago’s point of view but Iago changes the real reason of Desdemona and Cassio’s talk and taints it with his poisonous
