1. Be an effective listener.
Event: An employee quit her position immediately upon the completion of her training. The employee scheduled a time to meet with the nurse manager to discuss the reason as to why she had to quit. The meeting between the employee and manager occurred on July 10, 2015.
Resolution: The nurse manager listened to the employee and made her aware of the other steps that she would need to take in order to finalize her termination with the organization.
Application to the skill: The application to the skill involved the nurse manager listening to the employee and showing empathy to her situation. She also provided her with the necessary feedback needed in order to complete the termination process.

Every effective manager must be able to motivate his or her personnel.
Event: Three nurses were nominated for the Daisy Awards. This award is presented to nurses who have demonstrated performance excellence in the field of nursing. The nomination occurred on June 29, 2015.
Resolution: All three nurses received a miniature candy along with a note from the nurse manager letting them know that they had been nominated, by whom they were elected and the reason why they were chosen.
Application to the skill: The nurse manager was able to motivate her personnel both intrinsically and extrinsically. These nurses received an internal reward of knowing that they had been nominated and the reasoning behind the nomination. As well as receiving an external reward of a treat from the nurse manager.
What you learned: I learned that an effective manager takes the time to get to know his/her employees and what motivates them. In this scenario the nurse manager gave the employees their favorite miniature candy bar and along with a note that contained information which provided them with positive feedback. By doing so she reinforced the employees to continue performing the desired behavior which will have a positive impact on the

An effective manager plans the use of time—time does not manage the manager.
Event: Lacks Leadership meeting. The meeting involves every leader from the Lack Cancer Center in order to discuss changes and events that were occurring through this area of the organization. This meeting occurred on July 23, 2015.
Resolution: Some topics were running long and the leader of the meeting managed to keep everyone on track. She was effective in bringing the conversations back to the main topic and keeping the flow of the meeting going with the scheduled time. The leader also helped to encourage participation and communication among those in attendance.
Application to the skill: This skill applies to management as it is important for a leader to have the ability to stay on track when presenting a meeting. It is also important for a manager to pose the skill to bring a group back to the topic. As well as the ability to motivate others to participate and communicate during a meeting.
What you learned: I learned that it can be challenging to lead a meeting, especially one that is timed. A good leader must pose the skill to motivate and stay on track which can be someone difficult. Lastly, it is important for a manager to stay on track in a healthcare organization as employees are busy and cannot really stay later than the time they have carved out in order to attend the meeting. It makes the leader look professional and it shows the staff that their time is valued by the
