On June 30th 1936 Haile Selassie stood facing the league of nation strongly urging them to take action against Italy and its violent attempts to colonized Ethiopia. “It’s us today, and you tomorrow” he stated. And despite his strong efforts the League of Nations took no part in stopping Italy at the time but the speech he had given had changed the worlds view on him forever. He was educated by French missionaries and was exposed to many different cultures as he grew up which was pretty rare for any African boy. On November 1930 he was named emperor and went on to modernize Ethiopia. Emperor Haile Selassie was the most influential charismatic leader. He was smart, open-minded and much more progressive then his predecessors; his policies led to a stronger Ethiopia. He is still currently viewed as the figurehead of African independence for his defiance against Italy. He established social reforms which included provincial schools throughout Ethiopia, he outlawed feudal taxations, and strengthened the police force. His travel abroad included France, Italy, Sweden, Greece, England, and Jamaica which gained him favorable social recognition internationally.
