Emotional and Behavioral Disorder (EBD) is a term under mental health disorder that is used as an umbrella to talk about a range of disorders. Under this umbrella, it can include but is not limited to anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, conduct disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and psychotic disorder. According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), EBD is defined as “A condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational performance”. Some of those characteristics are the inability to learn, an inability to build or maintain relationships with peers and teachers, inappropriate types of behavior or feelings, a general mood of unhappiness, and a tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems. Along with a variety of characteristics, there are learning challenges, factors that contribute to this diagnosis, and adaptions/modifications that can be made to help children with EBD succeed.
Children who struggle with EBD can demonstrate a variety of characteristics beyond just emotional ones. They can demonstrate hyperactivity, aggression, withdrawal, immaturity and learning difficulties. Children who have EBD will demonstrate these behaviors over a long period of time which is how it’s different from children who only display these behaviors during development.
