With the popularity of e-cigarettes, there has been an increase in nicotine poisonings in the state of New Mexico and across the United States over the past few years. The poisonings are related to the increased popularity of the electronic cigarette and their easy accessibility to the public. According to The Tobacco Products, E-Cigarettes and Nicotine Liquid Container Act (SB 433) of New Mexico (2015) “There has been a dramatic increase in the number of such reported exposures, including a doubling from 2012 (17 cases) to 2013 (34 cases), nearly doubling again from 2013 (34 cases) to 2014 (62 cases) with 45% of these exposures in New Mexico having occurred among children, ages five years or younger.” (p. 3). This proves that liquid nicotine is a growing issue here in New Mexico. Although the above quote is statistics on children, adults are still at risk of poisoning themselves.
Although the electronic cigarette is being marketed as a safer alternative to conventional smoking, it is still potentially dangerous to New Mexico residents because of its required use of liquid nicotine. Liquid nicotine was introduced to the population in 2006 through electric cigarettes, which are also known as e-cigarettes (e-cigs) or vaporizers, and have become very popular among minors.
