The main concern regarding the use of electronic cigarettes is that no one knows what ingredients or chemicals are in them. It's difficult to decide if they are safer than cigarettes if one doesn't have enough information to compare the two. Although there have not been enough studies conducted to know exactly how many chemicals are in electronic cigarettes, there have been 42 identified (Harmful Chemicals in Electronic Cigarettes). Out of the 42 identified chemicals, there are certain ones that are especially harmful such as acetaldehyde, acetone, cadmium, lead, and nicotine (Harmful Chemicals in Electronic Cigarettes). Besides these dangerous chemicals, there are others that emit second-hand smoke. These chemicals include Benzene, diethylene glycol, formaldehyde, isoprene, nicotine, and …show more content…
Among these toxic chemicals found by the FDA was diethylene glycol, as mentioned before, which is used in anti-freeze (Are E-cigarettes Safer Than Regular Cigarettes?). Also, "a recent study looked at 42 of these liquid cartridges and determined that they contain formaldehyde" which is a chemical that causes cancer (Are E-cigarettes Safer Than Regular Cigarettes?). The chemicals in electronic cigarettes, however, are not all toxic. There are certain chemicals found in these devices that are claimed to be perfectly safe such as vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, and polyethylene glycol (Vaping & Health Concerns). The chemical, vegetable glycerin, is a compound that is the base ingredient of vape juice, making up 80% to 90% of the mixture and is often combined with propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol (Vaping & Health Concerns). Although there are various toxins found in electronic cigarettes, the toxins found in cigarettes have higher amounts. It was even discovered that in electronic cigarettes "the levels of the toxicants were 9-450 times lower than in cigarette smoke" (Levels Of Selected Carcinogens and Toxicants In Vapour From Electronic
