Since 2013, there was a wide variability in e-cigarette product engineering, including: nicotine concentrations in e-liquids, variable volumes of e-liquids in the product, different carrier compounds (propylene glycol with or without glycerin), different additives, flavors, and battery voltage.
Instead of burning tobacco in conventional cigarette to release smoke that contains nicotine, users of e-cigarettes will heat a nicotine liquid and convert the liquid to a vapor then inhale it. Depending on the e-cigarette, inhalation may be directly from the cartridge or through using a manual switch.
Regardless of the exact design each e-cigarette has a rechargeable lithium battery, vaporization chamber and a cartridge. The lithium battery functions as the power house, it is connected to the vaporization chamber which is a hollow tube that contains electronic controls, in addition to the atomizer which creates the vapor. To activate the atomizer, e-cigarette users inhale the same way they would inhale tobacco cigarettes, this will heat the liquid in the cartridge and convert the e-liquid to a vapor which is inhaled to deliver nicotine to the lungs.

The major issue with these liquids is the lack of quality control, manufacturers may not disclose all of the chemical ingredients used in their products which will prevent the proper evaluation of the short- or long-term health effects of using them. In order to accurately assess benefits and harms of e-cigarettes, many studies have been conducted to determine the chemical composition of both e-liquids and their vapors. One study conducted by FDA in 2009 showed that cancer-causing compounds found in tobacco were also found in some e-cigarette cartridges, along with other toxins, one of them being diethylene glycol – a toxic chemical used in anti-freeze

Also, "a recent study looked at 42 of these liquid cartridges and determined that they contain formaldehyde" which is a chemical that causes cancer (Are E-cigarettes Safer Than Regular Cigarettes?). The chemicals in electronic cigarettes, however, are not all toxic. There are certain chemicals found in these devices that are claimed to be perfectly safe such as vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, and polyethylene glycol (Vaping & Health Concerns). The chemical, vegetable glycerin, is a compound that is the base ingredient of vape juice, making up 80% to 90% of the mixture and is often combined with propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol (Vaping & Health Concerns).…
