The two major databases that I selected for the research were CINAHL database and Google scholar. These databases provided ample number of articles and journals from which the search could be concluded. The first keyword which was searched in the CINAHL database was “electronic charting” which resulted into 4, 745 results. In order to have quantitative search, the second word that I searched was “paper charting” which resulted into 5,678 results. When the terms “electronic charting”and “paper charting” were searched together using VS then the results turned to be 895. The CINAHL heading “hospitalized surgical patients” produced 23,890 results which were further combined with the previous combination of “electronic charting”, “paper charting” and “hospital”. Conclusion
In the most relevant qualitative and quantitative study, it has been concluded that the use of electronic charting over paper charting is beneficial of maintaining the records of the patients during their stay at the hospital. In order to reduce the future risks of post-operative complications, the quantitative research focused on the use of electronic charts whereas, the quantitative research highlighted the drawbacks of paper charting for recording the patient’s history.
