Due to the president and Vice President being inbetween Thomas Jefferson and his running mate Aaron Burr occurred due to a tie in votes by the Electoral College. Democratic-Republicans win…
On election day, the Democrats arrived at polls armed and ready to assault blacks who had come to place their vote. Voters rigged the ballot boxes and, as expected, the Democrats ended up winning by a large majority. The next day, Alfred Waddell created a Committee of Twenty-five and led its first meeting, during which a series of resolutions collectively known as the White Declaration of Independence were passed. These resolutions included the forced exile of Alex Manly, the closing of the Daily Record, and the expulsion of all current black officeholders, The White Declaration of Independence was presented to the Committee of Colored Citizens (a group of nine black men considered to be powerful in Wilmington) as an ultimatum, and they were given until 7:30 the following morning to deliver a response (Umfleet, 94). Due to complications with delivery, the…
Adam Walker 5/24/16 History Bush vs Gore Bush v. Gore was a controversial case between the front runners of each presidential party of the United States. This case was heard on December 11, 2000. The point of this case was to decide the outcome of the presidential election. The race to decide the next president of the United States took place on Nov 7, 2000.…
Not since the 1876 election, where Rutherford B. Hayes surreptitiously agreed to withdraw federal troops from the South (effectively ending reconstruction) in exchange for the democrats ceding the Presidency, had an election been so fiercely contested. The contention associated with the 2000 presidential election reflected the American people’s ambivalence towards the direction the nation should move towards as it entered the 21st century. Despite the nation’s relatively prosperous period under the Clinton administration, the election of George W. Bush marked American indisposition to completely depart with Reagan conservatism, which had prevailed in the decade prior. So it is in this divisive political environment, on the heels of a controversial election, which raised legitimacy concerns, that George W. Bush ascended to the presidency seeking to reinvigorate the besieged conservative political…
. . did the Florida Supreme Court make any substantive change in Florida electoral law. . . It did what courts do -it decided the case before it in light of the legislature's intent to leave no legally cast vote uncounted. In so doing, it relied on the sufficiency of the general “intent of the voter” standard articulated by the state legislature, coupled with a procedure for ultimate review by an impartial judge, to resolve the concern about disparate evaluations of contested ballots. If we assume- as I do-that the members of that court and the judges who would have carried out its mandate are impartial, its decision does not even raise a colorable federal…
On November 21st, 2000, The Florida Supreme Court ruled that recounts for the shaky 2000 presidential election should continue instead of halting. Initially, Vice President Al Gore had attained 260 electoral votes and but had lost the popular vote by a slim 1,784 votes. Because of this, Florida was caught between voting for Governor George Bush and for Al Gore. Recounts were enacted, which lowered Bush’s votes by about 327. Gore had ordered hand recounts in Palm Beach, Broward, Miami Dade, And Volusia counties.…
Hayes was a Republican while Tilden was a democrat. These were rough times. The federal troops were stationed in the South to enforce the Reconstruction. The nation was suffering economically. This election was very hostile as both parties continuously bad mouthed each other.…
In the 2006 Midterm Elections, President Bush Jr.’s approval rating was at a historically low of…
The 2000 Presidential election was the first time George W. Bush ran for president. He ran against Dick Cheney and won. The electoral votes were 271-266 with George having more. This was a significant election because it was the 4th election in all of American history where the candidate that had more electoral votes did not have more popular votes. In the 2008 Presidential Election first time candidate Barack Obama went against John McCain.…
The Electoral College is not, as its name suggests, a physical place, but more appropriately a procedure. It was formed by the framers of our Constitution as a compromise between a popular vote and Congressional vote for the presidential election process. They felt that the general public of their time was not educated enough to elect the president, as well as they aimed to keep the election of the president out of the hands of the majority. It is called for by Article II, Section 1, Clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution and was adjusted by the 12th and 23rd amendments. The Electoral College currently consists of 538 members with the number of electoral votes per state being equal to the amount of representatives sent to the House plus the two…
Have you ever wondered if the 2000 presidential election was fair? Well many people have wondered what would have happened if there had been a recount. This election was won off the fact that the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of George Bush. This meant the recount was called off and George Bush won the 2000 presidential election. The US Supreme Court made the wrong decision because there is a standard for recount, they didn’t count all of the votes that were placed and not every person was treated equally.…
In my opinion, I believe that when it comes to the 2000 presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore, Gore was the true champion. First of all, Gore was ahead until the state of Florida was counted and the votes were considered too close to call. Had the votes been counted this way, a clear winner would emerge, despite the fact that Gore and Bush may have ended up close in numbers. It is possible that the election may have been labeled a close call since the votes in Florida had the ability to carry the entire election. Furthermore, Al Gore was bound to win from the beginning, seeing as he was the clear favorite.…
After viewing the film Recount I have came to the conclusion that the 2000 general U.S. election between Al Gore and George Bush was skewed. The voting process in Florida at that time was without a doubt faulty and if the State of Florida had no special interest in the general election they would have not been so mysterious throughout the recount process. In specific Katherine Harris, Florida Secretary of State made it obvious that she indeed favored the Bush campaign. This is true as she went to the extent of twisting State law by claiming that the only way to extend the recount deadline was if there was a “natural disaster” when the law actually states that it is up to the person in her position to decide if an extension is necessary.…
In the 2000 election between Al Gore and George W. Bush, the whole country, maybe even the world, was asked the same question, "who really won?" The HBO film, "Recount" about the election gave us the inside look of how everything went down up until Gore seceded. After watching for the intense 2 hours, my opinion was evident. The film did shine a light on how Mac Stipanovich influenced Secretary of State Katherine Harris to lean more towards the republicans. While Clay Roberts, Director Divisions of Elections, remained neutral and tried to keep his decision unbiased.…
The Bush v. Gore election and court case in 2000 was certainly a very pivotal time and decision in American history. It appeared that Bush had won the state of Florida, giving him the 271 electoral votes needed to win the Presidency. However, due to an extremely small margin of victory in Florida that favored Bush, Gore decided to challenge the count and fight for a re-vote, which is where the real trouble began. I believe that this case at times was both a political as well as legal and constitutional question. This case was a legal and Constitutional question due to the fact that the state of Florida was counting votes in an un-Constitutional way according to our United States Supreme Court.…
