Shirley Jackson's haunting hill house is told from the perspective of Eleanor Vance whose life was built on small guilts and reproaches. She heads to hill house to partake in an experiment involving paranormal activities alongside other people. During the course of the experiment, she was forced to face the absolute reality of the brokenness of her mind and Hill house becomes a material representation of her mind; reflecting back her mind to her .Eleanor never had a loving home although she longs for it. This text shows that Eleanor’s longing to reconnect with her mother could only be achieved through her death. “My mother ----..”She unconsciously brought up mother, it smells of decay because her mother is dead, Eleanor sees the library as a tomb/womb. Earlier in the text she says “ I am like a small creature swallowed whole by a monster ,she thought and the monster feels my tiny little monsters inside" (29),This suggests what happens in the womb when a baby is developing ,here Eleanor is the small creature and the monster is her mother. The library which represents the womb is the last place where she feels the love she longs for, the library is her gateway to the trapped door that leads to her not existing at all which is actually the home she craves. Hence, the only way to get ‘home’ is through the library which is the tomb to
