The Movie El Norte
The movie “El Norte” directed by Gregory Nava, released in 1984 was not backed by a major Hollywood studio. Perhaps because this movie hit home with a sub group and would not yield the revenue a common neutral hero villain movie would yield. One may see this from a negative aspect but the fact that a movie was made that depicts the immigrant struggle is a move forward for the Latino culture.
El Norte sends the viewer into an authentic “helicopter view” of the struggle for survival of the main protagonists Enrique and Rosa; a brother and sister that are in their early twenties when their father a labor organizer plans a revolt against their oppressor, a villain …show more content…
The protagonist Rosa sees a bunch of white flowers in a field just before meeting her brother after the massacre. The white flower is the national flower is known as the Sacuanjoche. The Sacuanjoche flower grows on a conical type of tree that flowers around May, (National Symbols, n.d.).
They befriend a man that helps them across the border only to assault Enrique for his money since an earlier conversation between the two had been how much money they had to cross the border and the newly found “friend” had been informed that they had a lot of money. During the assault for the money Enrique gets the better of the fight and the assailant asks Enrique well how much do you have” and Enrique said $1,500 pesos to which the assailant states I busted my $%%$#@ for twenty dollars? This also accurately depicts the struggles the immigrants face when crossing the border.
The two eventually meet the coyote recommended by their contact in their town and cross through the border by crawling through an old/unused sewer duct where they are attacked by rats but survive and are met at the American side by this same person that greets them with sandwiches stating “I am a first class coyote” and while receiving their food they get their first glimpse at the shimmering lights from San Diego,
