College is a place that wants to help their students make better choices for themselves. Cigarettes can affect people internally and externally with the toxic chemicals that it contains. Young adults gain an interested in smoking cigarettes because of the influence they receive from other people. Smoking on college campuses should be unacceptable because students could look for other opportunities to handle their problems. If colleges banned the use of smoking cigarettes on campus, it can lower the number of secondhand smokers and reduce the rate of health deterioration in a person that smokes cigarettes. The effect of smoking on college campuses affects people that do not smoke since they have to inhale the same smoke-infested air circulating around.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by smokers. Secondhand smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds are toxic and about 70 can cause cancer.” It can be harmful to people who are around cigarette smoking constantly, since they are receiving the smoke being released. Being on a college campus means that a diverse number of people are surrounded by smokers and not enough locations have smoke-free areas.
