What 's in our food? Now many do not care or know exactly what is in their food, as long as it tastes good. However, you should be more cautious about what you consume because genetic engineering has been evolving constantly with the help of technological advancements. Genetic Engineering has generated controversial questions regarding GM (genetically modified) foods. GM foods have impacted the economy by imposing environmental problems, health risks, and how labeling should be mandatory in production.
The basis of genetic engineering is modifying an organism 's genetic composition by transferring specific traits (genes) from one organism into with a plant or animal. In this case, modifying both plants and animals raises potential concerns to human consumption and environmental hazards. In agriculture scientific terms are used because genetic engineering affects multiple components. For instance, you will need to know that pesticides are substances that are used to destroy insects harmful to cultivated plants. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a bacterium that is used as a biological pesticide. Herbicides are also used in agriculture that are toxic to plants and used to destroy unwanted vegetation. All of these terms will be essential parts in explaining how GM foods are harmful to both men and the environment.
