Genetic Engineering In Gattaca

Improved Essays
In today's society we are continuously advancing in our technology. Genetic engineering is the fastests way towards evolution for mankind. The movie Gattaca by Andrew Niccol gives us an example on how genetic engineering is used more commonly in the future. Now with the technology, we are given the opportunity to control our babies genetic and physical attributes. Genetic engineering is also creating a major concern on what we should or should not do while modifying our genes. I believe that genetically modifying our way to being better or more healthier is not right. We should all go through life naturally the way we are suppose too by accepting who we are.

You are born a way that will either help you or give you a hard time. Some people are born with good vision, a good height, and other useful characteristics. There are others who are born with disabilities and difficulties. Genetically modifying our babies to be better would not help at all. You can still get by in life if you work hard for it and if you keep yourself healthy. In the movie GATTACA the main character Vincent feels inferior about himself because he lives in a world full of modified people. Even though Vincent was not perfect he still managed to do well and get his dream job. Genetics is part of our human potential but it depends on the person and how far they are willing to go. Furthermore Vincent had also beaten his chance of getting heart disease by just staying fit and being healthy. Genetically modifying ourselves really is …show more content…
Parents are able to design their own babies to make them better fit for the world and have a better chance of surviving. An example would be Vincent’s brother Anton who was born modified. Living in an artificial world can lead to consequences. Evolution would cease to exist because certain genes are gone and the gene pool would be much smaller. Evolution does create diversity and it also makes some people aware that humans are not invincible. However when mutations are eliminated in DNA, one DNA strand cannot create diversity. So who knows what the GATTACA population will look after generations. A example of energy used in the movie is when Anton and Vincent play chicken swimming towards the sea. Anton and Vincent use their full capacity to see who would go back or get tired. At first Vincent would lose but over time he started to win. Vincent had used all his energy to beat his brother. Information transfer through the movie of GATTACA can be when the scientists introduced the sperm and egg to each other to make a modified baby. An example of interactions can be when the scientist create the modified baby. Genetic engineering is shown throughout the movie

Genetic engineering used to be the thing the scientists experimented on plants and animals but now humans. I dont think its right to change the way people live life just to either look a little better or be a little smarter. It's okay in some situations, for instance when someone has really bad pain and it is never ending. We need something to fix it that is not pain killers. Instead we should just have surgery and never feel that amount of pain again but just enough pain to the point where we don't hurt yourself without knowing it (Doc 2).…

The Artificial Selection of Gattaca In the “near future”, society has unequally categorized humans into the altered embryos; perfect humans and “faith babies”, the less than perfect humans. In the movie Gattaca, only the superior humans have vast career opportunities and places to fit in life. The lead character, Vincent, dreams of becoming an astronaut, but is unable to because he isn’t a perfect human. In a society like this, many issues would form.…

The movie, Gattaca, displays an example of how the world would be like in the future if it were more advanced with the choice of genetic modification. In the movie, the main character, Vincent, was identified at birth that he had larger chance of having disorders and a shorter lifespan, this was due to how Vincent wasn’t genetically modified. The fact that Vincent had these risks led to his parents panicking and having another child, Anton. However, the only difference between the two brothers was that Anton was chosen to be genetically modified which caused Anton to avoid the circumstances that Vincent had. Since genetic modification is the process of changing one’s cells to become an “improved organism,” it caused Anton to grow up to become…

Genetic modification and identification, ever thought about it? Well in the movie “GATTACA”, it shows many types of technology to identify someone by their role in society through genetic identification and modification, the way they use both identification and modification through technology and other sorts is pretty cool. Would you ever consider having genetic modification and identification as part of society today? I feel that it would be interesting to have these things part of our society, but at the same time somewhat scary. As of right now, I don’t really know how I feel about having genetic modification and identification as part of our society.…

Due to these facts that only “valid” people are accepted in the world, Jerome (Vincent) had to “borrow a ladder” meaning he had to go under as a different name to achieve his goal to get into outer space after his own parents told him he could never become what he wanted because he is a god child un-like his brother. “It’s You, But Simply the Best you” What does this quote truly mean in the world of genetic modification, is it Still you, or is science? In the future discrimination isn’t going to be based on race, color, or religion it’s going to be based down to a science. In the world of Gattaca Jerome’s (Vincent) Goal was to get to outer space but he knew he could never do that because he was a “faith child” meaning he was born naturally with all his imperfections…

Designer Babies If a parent could insure that their child was born healthy, why should they not? Over the past few years science has progressed in the fields of medical science, and genetic understanding. It is do to these advances that the human race is presented with the choice; alter the path of future generations, or let natural selection continue to reign supreme. Clearly parents-to-be need to take advantage of the medical know-how and worked to strengthen the human race. Even though this question presents itself with an obvious answer, it still remains a touchy subject.…

My position on genetic enhancement is similar to Sandel’s point of view in the sense that I agree we shouldn’t do it just because we want to “master humanity” as he calls it. I believe that we should do it to help others in a medical sense. What I mean when I say to help people medically should be defined as genetic enhancement is of course a medical procedure. When I say medically I mean only to help the person to be a normal human so no laser eyes or shape shifting or anything equally ridiculous. I should also define what it is to be a “normal” human as well.…

The issue that I am going to write my paper over is about genetically engineered embryos and whether or not further research should be done to allow the altering of an unborn fetus. My first topic that came to my mind when I heard about this assignment was actually abortion. Then we were shown a list of banned topics and abortion was number one on the list which was disappointing. Later when we went to the library to search for our topics, I ran across an article that interested me. It was about babies that were genetically engineered.…

Genetically Modified Organism Everyday Usage What is your stance on genetically engineering organisms to contain better genes within agriculture? Over the past decades gene engineering has been a huge topic of discussion between the public. Questions have erupted on whether the benefits from GMOs (genetically modified organism) outway the problems and on whether it is morally right to modify creatures for humans satisfaction. With a little education one will find that gene manipulation should be used in agriculture to ensure that farmers can produce the best crops and livestock to feed the future due to the fact that GMOs create disease-resistant crops, increase the productivity of crops and livestock, and lastly enhance the overall food quality while being environmentally beneficial (Ormandy, Elisabeth H., Julie Dale, and Gilly Griffin).…

The first negative aspect to the world of GATTACA would be that those chosen to be one’s partner seemed to be solely based on the other person’s genetic sequence and their “ranking.” When Irene goes to sequence Jerome’s (Vincent’s) hair and gets the sequence back, the person working at the sequencing booth tells her that Jerome’s “rating” is a 9.3 and that he is “quite the catch.” By saying this, combined with the public sequencing booths, the world of GATTACA is one that is based on genes and makes it seems like that there would be no love at first sight, but rather love at the first sight of each other’s sequences. Also, when the public sequencing booth told Irene that Jerome (Vincent) his rating, how was Jerome’s sequence rated?…

Some believe that giving parents the option of genetically engineering their baby will result in eugenics driven by egoism. People might take advantage of germline manipulation by creating embryos that will be their own idea of what is perfect, thus objectifying and commodifying children. Some opposers even say that because these embryos will not have a say in whether they want to be modified or not, their rights will be taken away. Furthermore, regulating laws ensuring that genetic modification is used only for the correction of genuinely medical genetic conditions as opposed to enhancing a child’s appearance will be nearly impossible. Rich parents will use…
