It is important to know the effect of physical activity or aerobic exercise on lung capacity. There are several forms of lung capacity: total lung capacity, vital capacity, inspiratory capacity, and functional residual capacity. There are different lung volumes that help to calculate all of the different lung capacities. They include: tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume, and residual volume. Aerobic exercise strengthens your lungs and heart and trains your cardiovascular system to manage and deliver oxygen more effectively throughout your body. Aerobic exercise uses your large muscle groups, is rhythmic in nature, and can be maintained continuously for at least ten minutes.
Background
The maximum amount of air your lungs can hold is about six liters, which equates to about three large soda bottles. Some of the air that enters the lungs does not participate in gas exchange, however. Air of this nature is located in the anatomical dead space within bronchi and bronchioles that is outside the alveoli. From experience, one would know that your lungs can respond to body’s changing need for oxygen. When exercising vigorously, one breathes deeper and faster to help keep them going.
