I see the big question “what is effective leadership?” emerging so far in the Lord of the Flies book. As Jack and Ralph compete for leader, some of the children must have considered how leadership under each party would have been. We know that Jack is a leader because he was leading the choir boys around the island and able to control them into following his orders even when they don’t want to. Even after knowing that Jack had leadership experience and not knowing whether or not Ralph would be a good leader, he was elected over Jack. The first sign that Ralph might be an effective leader is that he assigned roles to the group successfully and that he uses the conch shell as a symbol is power over others in the
