In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, Golding demonstrates the ideal leader. The protagonist shows qualities, which makes him an exemplary leader. Characteristics that distinguish Ralph from the other boys on the island are his abilities to share power, know what needs to be done, strong work ethic, and maintain the order. Ralph is the prime candidate to lead the boys on the island due to his natural leadership skills. Ralph’s ability to allow his power to be shared among others, demonstrates his capability to be a leader for the people. Ralph continues to work rather than vacationing on the island like the other boys. Knowing what needs to be done, Ralph gets to work with building huts, instead of doing all of the things he wants to do without adults. He says, “I’ve been working [all day] with Simon. No one else. They’re off bathing, or eating, or playing” (Golding 50). Ralph builds a shelter because it is a necessity for survival. He chooses to build shelters rather than following everyone else’s choice to only benefit themselves. Ralph works all day to get the work done, and does not give minimal effort. His work ethic shows that he is not backing down and will not give up. He continues to work because it benefits the whole group not just himself. If Ralph did join the rest of the boys that are enjoying themselves, the boys would not frown upon it. They would not care that a shelter that is needed is not being built. Ralph takes up the responsibility of building the shelters because he knows that if he does not build the shelters no one else will.
