Many individuals celebrated as highly effective leaders have character traits which society classifies as both good and bad. However, from the broad definition of leadership, the end seems to justify the means. Leadership is influencing through motivation so individuals or subordinates will accomplish activities, goals, or objectives. Personal attributes of a leader are critical in defining his or her input in leading individuals or an organization. Known successful leaders can be classified as rough or smooth. For example, Gandhi appeared to believe in smoothness whereas Hitler appeared to believe in sternness, yet both achieved the desired result. Knowledge is a determinant of success. Organizational strategies resonate behind knowledge. Further, the leader should demonstrate transparency to provide knowledge in any given area. Knowledge is necessary in influencing activities that occur in all areas of the organization. Adequate knowledge in a particular field is instrumental in defining organizational choices. A leader should see foresee the future and enact changes related to their knowledge the organization needs to achieve. Employees gauge the effectiveness of their leaders by observing their dependability. In many cases, the commitment of the leader translates into positive results. Similarly, dependability is a useful leadership characteristic as employees want to work with dependable leaders.
