Over the years, there has been a major evolution of educational opportunities for children with disabilities. In the beginning of history, there were very little opportunities for these children but federal legislation changed this to where they can now get the education they need and want. Children with disabilities were not able to be taught in a regular classroom like their peers. The children were required to go to an institution if they wanted to learn. The reason for the institutions was a result of people believing that children with disabilities were crazy or unstable which lead to decreased educational opportunities than other kids without disabilities. Before the decline of institutions in the early 1900’s they were beneficial to students by providing the children a safe environment for some learning, without the prejudice of others (Gargiulo and Kilgo, 2014, p. 15-16). While institutions were beneficial for some students, more educational opportunities were needed for all students with disabilities. In the early 1900’s, we start to see people fighting for special education in the public schools. One of the people that was fighting this cause was Alexander Graham Bell. As a result of this fighting, we began to see schools providing education to students with disabilities.
