“Second Essay on Ecological Imperialism”
In the book “Ecological Imperialism” a convincing argument by Crosby is made about European expansion. It was inevitable that they were the dominant world power after 1500. They were one of the first to present different innovative ideas to not only help with expansion but also prove them as the most dominant empire of the time. Europeans were the first to be willing to leave their home and expand to new lands such as Latin America or across central Asia. The societies of this time in Europe played a key role. The Norse was the main group to utilize boats and the ability to travel by sea. (Crosby, 47) This helped the Norse to go from town to town along the coast and gather supplies for their communities. The Spanish also made it to Latin America and America, and at the time same time conquered the areas.(Crosby, 62) As for Land travel Europeans had domesticated the horse and other animals for that matter but the horse gave them the ability to travel further distances at a much greater pace than traveling on foot. Horses also benefited militaries of the European Empire. This greatly increased the rate of trade with other countries such as India or China. They would use the Silk Road to travel most places such as these. Horses brought about the cavalry in the military as well. Another Innovation they had during the time frame of 1500 was medicine/herbs to treat illness. Weapons at the time were being made better. Their societies had become civilized and a form of government had been placed above all in them to give a since of authority over the people. Not only did it do that but also it regulated laws so that it could control the people. By forming a government a military had to be developed to protect this society so these two came hand and hand. The military would most likely enforce the laws among the people as well. Often times such as the Roman Empire the military would have a heavy influence over the government also depending on the size of the military. A government would also establish a common currency within that society so that trade would be made more convenient and in turn would boost the economy of that area. By increasing the wealth of a society like that it would bring more power to the country/society and it would expand much like the Roman
