I think this is really important because people are often able to realize when someone is not being authentic. I can personally speak to this as there has been situations in my own personal life where a person was agreeing with me, but I could sense that they actually felt differently. Why the person did not tell me how they really felt did not matter, whether it was because they wanted to avoid conflict, or did not feel comfortable voicing their opinion. What mattered is the result of them not being authentic with me. It made me more hesitant to share my feelings with them and would lose a level of trust towards them. This is why it is important to be congruent toward your clients so that you may build and maintain trust. Perhaps at an amplified importance for School Counselors working with students who have trust issues in adults as a moment of inauthenticity can shatter the trust that was built with them.
Being congruent as a counselor may sometimes consist of a counselor expressing a range of negative feelings toward client such as anger, frustration, concern etc. (Corey 2015). Growing up in my family we never talked much about emotions and feelings of one another and it was not a very supportive environment. I think that I and others similar to myself as a young student could have benefited from EFT as it helps clients increase awareness how to express and understand their emotions (Corey 2015).
