Japan is one of the top ten country in the world to live in. One can only imagine Japan as a well-developed, wealthy, and advanced in technological infrastructure, yet so powerful and discipline as a country. Some flashback to World War II, Japan was an over aggressive country that almost single handy took over the continent of Asia. With the help of the United State, they dropped two major bomb in the city of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it destroyed the city with huge explosive expositions. Japan ended up suffering and losing a huge amount of population. Moreover, Japan panic and unconditionally surrendered to the United States, and finally brought the end of World War II. In the article of “Transcending the Victim 's History: Takahata Isao 's Grave of the Fireflies” the narrator wrote “I argue that, while the film presents a realistic picture of suffering, it is also critical of a blind patriotism that masks selfish impulses during the war and, afterward, of Japan’s inability to confront this past.” (Goldberg 40). This explains the purpose of the movie and perhaps the message of the movie. At that time people had so much faith in their emperor. The citizen of Japan respects their country, and they are grateful to the decision their emperor is making. In the movie, Seita show a confidential expression throughout the whole film, every time there was a plane dropping fire-raid, he shows a furious facial expression and commented that “Dad will take revenge for us.” And when her aunt stated that “You must get more nourishments. You are going to grow strong and be a soldier, right?” (Nosaka 1988). Additionally, Seita had a constant flashback about his father of being a marines and served for the country. Likewise, Seita always dream of becoming a soldier like his father and fighting for his country. Later on, after Seita found out that the great Japanese empire surrender, he nodded his head and was unbelievable for him to believe it.
