When you think of circumstances within the hospital that can put patients at an increased risk for adverse effects, boarding in the emergency department (ED) is typically not one of them. Boarding patients within the ED is holding patients who have been admitted as in-patients but they do not have a bed available to them on the floor. This is a common practice. It is also a practice that increases risks for patients and alternatives should be considered. The day I first arrived to shadow on the ED they were boarding patients, one of which, waited for over 8 hours for an in-patient bed.
