There is a line in the musical Spamalot where Sir Robin sings to King Arthur; “In any great adventure, if you don 't want to lose ... you won 't succeed on Broadway if you don 't have any Jews!" (PBS, Broadway Musicals). If you can look past the sweeping generalization, Sir Robin’s surprising lyric turns out to be very true about musicals. Historians have recognized that Jewish immigrant culture heavily influenced the content of musical theatre when it was popularized in America during the early twentieth century. But in turn, it was the sociopolitical and racial climate of the 20th century that inspired the creative and thematic content of Jewish productions as well.…

Virginia Woolf discuss how women’s place in society can be shown by the difference of the two meals she received when she went on college visits (one to a male college one to a female college) she use her tone and the diction she uses. In every culture you can see a correlation between how high you are on the totem pole and the food you eat. The upper class may eat things like caviar, lobster and to tap it all off maybe some wine or Champaign. Whereas the lower class may have ramen noodles and tap that off with some Pepsi.…

In The Dinner of Trimalchio as part of Gaius Petronius Arbiter’s Satyricon, the now wealthy freedman Trimalchio has invited the hero Encolpius for a meal in his home, complete with a seemingly endless parade of food, wine and insanity. While the story may appear to be nothing but a farcical rendition of an unconventional dinner, greater meaning emerges from the story when viewed as a mixing of three distinct, but intertwined cultures, that of the slave, freed slave and freeborn roman. While Trimalchio is likely an unreliable witness when providing evidence…

When professor mentioned that we would watch and discuss about a Broadway Musical show named ‘Memphis’, the first that came to my mind was, the actual city Memphis in the southern state of Tennessee. I was still confused as to how a city and its activities could be incorporated into a Musical show, which is assumed to be entertaining with melodramatic components, dance and music. I had an assumption that it would be academic, political, boring since it is to be watched in a classroom setting and that a professor would not choose something entertaining or something of the liking of the younger generation. I deduced that this play might touch the topic of race since race defined how a person is treated in most southern states. I assumed that…

Even with Johnny Cash’s death, his music has continued to inspire and ignite generations.…

The ancient Romans were a social people, who rather than dining alone with their families, would attend decadent dinner parties at their friends houses. These dinner parties were a ritualistic affair that often lasted for hours at a time. They focused on culture and always had entertainment of some sort, from performers to the guests themselves who contributed by singing, dancing, reciting, and even making up short poems on the spot. This traditional Roman method of dining has been adopted and warped by Trimalchio, a wealthy man written about in Petronius’ “Satyricon”. Trimalchio was freed from slavery and grew such a tremendous amount of wealth that even upper-class would attend his parties just to get a free meal, despite his dinner parties…
