One piece of evidence for this is, “In the week before Rio de Janeiro's legendary New Year's Eve celebrations, 19 people died in the city after several buses were torched in the suburbs and drug gangs lobbed grenades and opened fire with automatic weapons on 12 police stations throughout the city(Vincent).” This attack left 19 people dead, not injured and dead, 19 people were killed. Innocent lives were taken in an attack from these cartels. Another good example is, “‘Ninety per cent of all crime today has drugs at the root,’ says Marina Maggessi, a former chief inspector of the Rio government's Drug Repression Centre(Vincent).” Almost all crime today, murder, manslaughter, larceny, is initially caused by drugs and/or the drug trade. That’s 90%, only 10% of ALL crime has no motive caused by drugs. Another time that shows this collateral damage is, “Last September, police in Paraguay uncovered an arms cache of 600 automatic weapons and 8,000 cartridges, which was destined for the PCC in São Paulo(Vincent).” These cartels are now pedaling guns as well as drugs, giving violent, unstable and evil men the tools to kill people, whoever they decide they want dead. These are just some of the many examples of collateral damage caused …show more content…
A good point brought up is, “The status quo leaves both the army and the police vulnerable. In a brazen bit of nose-thumbing, the Zetas, a paramilitary wing of the Gulf cartel (the Sinaloa gang's main rivals), recently hung up banners in several border towns inviting current and former soldiers to join them. The Zetas themselves were originally formed by army deserters(Economist).” These soldiers have given up so bad that they’ve joined and even created their own cartels, they were left vulnerable and in danger due to the power of these cartels. But that’s why these countries need the help of the U.S. They have been doing it basically by themselves, but when they did have U.S. help, they captured someone on the run for decades. With the U.S. army combining forces, we may be able to severely slow down this drug
