The genesis of all drug cartels in Mexico trace to a Mexican Judicial Federal Police agent Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo also known as "The Godfather". He was the founder of the “Guadalajara Cartel”, which controlled all illegal drug trade in and around Mexico’s border in 1980. Since 2006, the Mexican military have intervened with a goal of stopping all drug-related violence consisting inside Mexico’s borders, leaving drug trafficking a problem to the United States. It is possible that within the next few years the drug trafficking will slow down with help from other nations support. One of the ways other nations can help slow down drug trafficking is by adding more border patrol at major trade areas, causing drug cartels problems. Firstly, Since it will be harder to traffic drugs, prices will go up causing people living in poverty to not be able to afford drugs. Legalizing marijuana in the United States and other nations would definitely lower the amount of money earned by the cartels. Research by the Mexican Institute of Competitiveness released in October 2012 suggests that if only Washington, Colorado and Oregon legalized marijuana, then cartel profits would fall as much as 30 percent.₁₂ If the US as a whole legalized marijuana, it would shorten the cartels profits and would cause people to buy lab tested marijuana rather than imported marijuana. Since supply will boost through the roof, demand and price will sink causing major problems for the cartel. Second, if more nations work together and gather their intelligence then they will be able to confront these cartels while they are trafficking, and convict the felons. For cartels to be successful they will need to spend more money on transporting, basically resulting in a lot of cartels to stop trafficking.
