Part One: Background of drug trafficking Drug trafficking in one of the most significant issues internationally. As defined by the UNODC (United Nations Office on Drug and Crime), drug trafficking is an illegal trade that involves the production, selling, distributing, and purchasing of illicit narcotics. There are 200 million illicit drug users worldwide and that number continues to grow everyday. Depending on where you are in the world, drug trafficking can be the result of a myriad of different things. From minimal border regulation to the increasing supply and demand of drugs, narcotics are prevalent everywhere. Drug trafficking has made an enormous impact on middle eastern countries, especially Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Iran. The size of this market is estimated to have income around $13 billion dollars per year. These four countries lie on the largest heroin trafficking route in the world, mainly because Opium (which is used to create heroin) is largely produced in Afghanistan. The Islamic Republic of Iran and Turkey accounted for more than half of global heroin seizures and registered the highest and second highest seizures internationally. The Americas and Europe have been leading countries in cocaine trafficking and seizures, especially countries in Latin America (world’s main cocaine producers).
