There were studies that had shown that the brain of an addict is affected when they use their drug of choice by way of brain scans. Addiction is a disease which if not treated properly can spiral into something far worse. Many people begin with a mental illness such as depression. Simply willing themselves to stop is not enough for them to make the change necessary.
A person that uses changes in the way of their behavior and other elements of themselves. They can become angrier; may do things they may have never done before just to get the fix they need. Every day stress or even dwelling on what happened to them can be enough to get them to start in the first place. When they do they get a rush of dopamine which helps them cope or even forget about the problem that bothered them. One article states that "Addiction is a stress-induced defect in the midbrain 's ability to properly perceive pleasure." Another thing the article states was that no matter whether the drug of choice is an upper or a downer, they all cause the release of dopamine in the midbrain.
