Domestic violence is one of the most traumatic experiences a person can go through. A typical vignette describing domestic violence is a male and a female in a romantic relationship such as being in a relationship, engaged, or married. Out of these two individuals, it is usually seen that the woman in the relationship is the victim of domestic violence. Research has shown that domestic violence is one of the leading causes of injury to women ages 15-44. This statistic is higher than women being injured in motor vehicle accidents, in muggings, and in rapes combined. While domestic violence victims are primarily women, men can also be subjected to a domestic incident. Regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, or any other prejudicial view of a person, it is unethical and illegal to be the victim of domestic violence. This type of crime is extremely traumatic as some victims have harder experiences overcoming their internalized personal hurdles.
Domestic violence can be categorized as interpersonal violence as it is a form of violence between people. While these incidents are typically seen in heterosexual relationships, it can occur between siblings, parents, and even roommates. Specifically speaking, domestic violence is a pattern of control by one individual over the other individual in the dyadic relationship.
