Most people are aware of what domestic violence is. The dictionary definition is defined as the following: “acts of violence or abuse against a person living in one's household, especially a member of one's immediate family” (Dictionary.com). When this particular topic is brought up, most people only worry about the effects of domestic violence. Society notes it for causing a permanent mental instability, harsh injuries, or even suicide. Unfortunately, what most fail to think about are the causes. What causes such a violent behavior to begin with? Does it come from a psychological aspect? Is it a result of how they were raised? Narcissism, for instance, is not just a virtue with a negative connotation. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is an actual behavioral disorder. According to Mayo Clinic Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a “mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others” (Mayo Clinic). This psychological disability can lead to a controlling nature. Therefore, this controlling nature can cause this person to become unstable and lash out during certain situations that they are not in charge of. This response is extreme to most, but from their perspective this is how they overcome being put down from their always-right mentality. Domestic violence is never acceptable, but if it is a result of a behavioral disorder, it is their second nature. One would also have to keep in mind that their family background can play into effect. Although it may not be a direct result of poor parenting, a poor childhood may cause some of these issues. Despite the fact that our idea of home should be some cozy warm sense of security, there are people out there who do not get to say the same. Some children may not necessarily leave their house in bruises, but a harsh living environment can cause the same emotional pain as it would physical pain. This consistent way of living may start to become natural to that
