Domestic violence is a serious problem that affects a large percentage of people every day. According to the national domestic violence hotline, “On average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States — more than 12 million women and men over the course of a year” (Statistics, n.d.). However when most people think of domestic violence the picture that comes to mind is of a housewife or girlfriend. However statistics show “1 in 10 men (10%) in the US have experienced rape, physical violence and/or stalking by a partner and report a related impact on their functioning” (Statistics, n.d.). Therefore the act of not including them in the afflicted, continues the victimisation process and trivializes the lives of men who suffer abuse. In some ways it is almost as if male victims are victimize repeatedly by the system that does not offer support. Domestic violence is a crime and in addition has long standing effects even after one is removed from the situation.
Aside from the physical repercussions of domestic violence the mental and emotional effects can last a lifetime. In addition men suffer twice because often times they can be ridiculed and made to feel as if their manhood is somehow in question. However domestic violence is not always about who is bigger or stronger. Yet domestic violence encompasses a wide variety of abuse methods.
