Her father Juan was a farm worker, miner and union activist who ran for political office and won a seat in New Mexico legislator in the year 1938 (doloreshuerta.org). Much of Dolores inspiration to become a leader and make a change in the life of immigrants was inspired by his father Juan. Yet, after the divorce of his parents, Dolores moved to Stockton, California with his mother to whom much of Dolores independence was gained from seeing her mother’s compassion to others and strength to carry her loved ones to become a feminist activist, because she believed that women were stronger that what the Hispanic community had painted them to be. Dolores mother, Alicia was widely recognized by her community by promoting cultural diversity in her 70-room hotel. During the time that Dolores was fighting for the injustices made to farm workers she realized the impact that she had in young women everywhere. During one of the boycotts taken place in California she came into contact with Gloria Steinem whom she realized the common interest to serve and fight for women’s rights. Dolores Huerta then began her journey to challenge gender discrimination not only in the farms but everywhere where women stepped. Dolores Huerta knew that the best method to acquire this was to fight with her family by her side and in a non-violent way. She encouraged families to unite in the cause for they were the ones who were working the fields and they were the ones who were being treated unfairly. Because of Dolores Huerta influence to raise awareness within women and farm workers it is that Dolores faced many life- threatening attacks, as the one previously mentioned. After the attack in San Francisco, Dolores Huerta decided that it was time to take a leave of absence to recover from the mental and physical pain that had been caused by the authorities. Despite the horrific encounter with the SFPD, Dolores Huerta was capable of indirectly influence the way that the police would handle crowds and was rewarded a settlement in the process.
