As I walk into the halls of my college campus expecting to become a woman who makes a difference in this world I never thought that the color of my skin would put me in a place of defense. Attending a class that teaches students how to become culturally responsive should make me feel comfortable to be on a campus with such diversity. As I sat in this class I felt so small and defensive as the class room spoke their true feelings about those that are white. I was verbally attacked while being told that I couldn’t be trusted because I am white. I mentally crawled into a shell and am now doing what I have to do just to get through this class, with anticipation for it to just be over. If this kind of atmosphere is allowed to be in a classroom …show more content…
We are told when we first enter the Culture Competent class to leave all biases at the door. But, with my experience in this class to me it seems that only those who are white have to disarm any pre-judgments and biases. Students of color, as well as the instructor are allowed to be racist and hold on to the biases they have towards the white’s. What we need on this campus is teachings on how to move into a principled activist stage, instead of instigating those who are still in the affective/impulsive stage. To be culturally responsive we need to understand one another by individuality, rather then by race. During this quarter of college it has come to my attention that there has been a stigma on the white race that goes unnoticed. This discrimination is a result from the oppression that the white race inflicted on those of color over 100 years ago. I believe we should never be insensitive to this piece of history. Lee Mun Wah made an excellent point, when saying “we do not see the world as it is, but by whom we are”. This may very well be the reason as to why there is such controversy when it is regarding racism. For example, when there is a family system that still carries the trauma from the oppression of slavery they will teach the younger generation to continue hating white people. This is one of the barriers to cultural competence. This barrier occurs on our campus. For instance, while I was in my Cultural Competent class I experienced this. While discussing the topic of white privilege I was verbally attacked by a woman of color. She stated, that “she could never trust me simply because I am white”. She believes that all white people are racist and untrustworthy. In fact she was displaying discrimination towards me for defending another white woman. At that moment I started to process why this woman would say this to me without even knowing who I am or what type of character I
