Ok after reading and researching the information for the new Disney film ,"Beauty and the Beast", I was very disappointed and nervous about what the heck Disney was thinking. I saw the news from the director claiming a great moment in gay history and I was shocked and angry. I couldn't believe that they would take such a beloved story from my childhood and ruin it! But I also heard reports that there was nothing wrong with it. So Mitch and I went to see it last night and here is my report. If the director thinks he made a shining moment for the gay history, he's mistaken. This is not a look gay people are normal movie. It just isn't. The new movie follows the beloved cartoon almost word for word and scene for scene. There were some

In regards to Chyna Little’s Grendel art project, titled “Beauty and the Beast”, my initial impression was that the booklet was well put together and very creative. I found the project to show the main purpose of the book quite well and found it to be very interesting. My initial impression of the conversation with Chyna was also well-understood and worth while. As Chyna and I conversed, she showed a great deal of interest in showing me each and every detail of the book and gave me a good reasoning for why she chose each section. Chyna was also patient with all my questions and had logical answers for each one, along with giving me her own honest opinion on her booklet with the effort placed into it and the weaknesses she felt should be explained.…

The first movie, How We Got Gay, the title says it all. How we got gay tells the powerful story of the struggle for gay rights, from the 40’s and 50’s to the present day. It talks about the secret lives gay people were forced to live, at a time when homosexuality was illegal and police harassment had become a fact of life. What was interesting was that the documentary explored what life was like for gay people at a time when homosexuality was seen as a mental illness, and to be openly gay was to live in utter exile from society. It is not only hard to live a life of pretend…

Although it is much different from the average children’s hero story, presenting it as an innocent kid friendly comic normalizes it. Modern kids comics featuring less accepted lifestyles are pushing us into a future of acceptance. Exposing children to this type of story can normalize the idea of two men being together, and other relationships that are not yet considered “normal” by many people around the world, resulting in a world with less hate. The more children who are raised with the idea of homosexuality being normal, the less homophobia we will have in our future. When kids are taught that homosexuality is normal and nothing to be ashamed of, we will see less kids using homophobic slurs to insult their classmates, in turn lowering the amount of homophobic adults and homophobic areas such as Laramie, around the…

In the context of a same-sex love story set against a Western backdrop, Ang Lee shows that there are no conflicting ideas of masculinity with homosexuality or same-sex attraction. More often, gay men are stereotyped in the media as being emasculated, unmanly or even feminized. In a research done by Fingerhut (2006), participants of his mention that gay men are perceived to be ‘feminine, having feminine qualities, feminine mannerism, a high pitch voice and hence, a feminine walk.’ In the film, Jack, and Ennis, however, are not stereotyped as mentioned thus allowing them to be masculine and in love with each other. This video is aimed towards showing homosexuals as dangerous people, and how they cannot be trusted. The director doesn’t show how straight people prey on young kids more often than homosexuals. This film has no back up or a claim to what it is presiding, it is stating random facts in which they believe to be true. This film lacks credibility, and the film is extremely biased and showcases homosexuals as a threat or a virus that will be caught if not careful. This film tries to make everything about homosexuals a bad thing, that being homosexual is dangerous and that you should go near one.…

When you think of the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, what do you remember? In the typical plot of Beauty and the Beast, Beauty aids the Beast in his transformation from beast to man. The focus of the typical storyline is the battle between innate traits and characteristics accepted by society. However, in Angela Carter’s post-modern rendition, Tiger’s Bride, not only does she shift the focus to explore the relationship between love and self-acceptance, but she also changes the plot in efforts to make Beauty undergo a transformation. Through Carter’s tone, exploration of power dynamics, and use of imagery, the story follows the progression of the love and self-acceptance that influences Beauty’s metamorphosis.…

The film I chose to do for this film review assignment was Longtime Companion. The movie premiered in 1989 and during that time our society was just beginning to understand that AIDS was a disease and research was being done on how to treat this disease. In the early 1980’s and up until the release of the film, those that had been diagnosed with AIDS had a very poor prognosis for survival. Also when the movie was released, society was beginning to realize that AIDS not only affected the gay community, but every member of our society. Today we now understand that AIDS does not discriminate and that this disease effects our entire society.…

Growing up typically the only version of fairy tales recognized by most children is the “Disney Version”. Although popular, the Disney stories are not the only ones to exist; surprisingly many other authors retold their own versions of well known fairy tales. No matter who wrote the tale or which tale is being told, there usually exists a pattern of similar themes throughout each story. The tale of Beauty and the Beast by Beaumont, exhibits many of the common themes found in literature, such as having a male dominant character, an innocent maiden and magical elements present throughout the story. These common elements can be found in almost every story from the Grimm Brother’s version to Walt Disney’s version.…
