When you think of the profession nursing, which gender comes to mind? A female would be the stereotypical response, but why? With nursing being my major I have noticed this stereotype more often than before I did much research on it. Individuals decide to become nurses to help save lives and to know they are helping change someone’s fate. Helping others impacts you in a special way that nothing else can compare to. There is an immense amount of care and compassion for this profession which is exactly why many people in the world choose this career path. Unfortunately, the profession of nursing is facing gender discrimination and stereotypes across the nation that prevent a lot of men from considering this profession. The conflict theory claims society is in a state of perpetual conflict due to competition for limited resources (“Conflict Theory”). Thus, meaning the wealthy hold on to everything they have, while suppressing the poor. The topic of male nurse discrimination can be seen as gender inequality for obvious reasons. Men tend to have careers that don’t risk losing their masculinity. Historically it has always been viewed this way, but now that more men are going into the nursing field it has become more accepting. With more information being spread to men, it can help with their understanding on how nursing is available to anyone who chooses and the outstanding amount of benefits it carries. Males should not have to face anyone demasculinizing them just for their career choice. The concepts and theories states are a good example of sociologically thinking about things we face in society.
