Difference Between The American Revolution And The Loyalists

At this time, the Americans were fighting for their independence against Great Britain. In the colonies, many families were split apart and friendships severed because the colonists could not agree on who to support in the war. The Patriots, also known as Whigs, were the colonists who were fighting against the British. The Loyalists, also known as Tories, were colonists who supported Great Britain and their efforts to control America. The Loyalists thought the Patriots were committing treason. The colonists set up an American military, but the Continental army was better trained and more reliable. George Washington, the General, had a hard time keeping his troops together and fighting battles with the British. In the colonies, the Congress had a hard time paying for the war and for necessary army supplies. As a result, Congress allowed for the army to take supplies from farmers with a promise of a future payment. At this time, the Patriots had no uniforms and they had many different weapons instead of a standard issued weapon like we have now. In 1777, Congress established an arsenal in Springfield, Massachusetts. However, most of the weapons the colonists had, were supplied by captives or by France, even though they had an arsenal. At one point during the war, Washington’s army nearly became nonexistent because of the smallpox disease during the winter. At the beginning of the spring, however, with a little incentive from Congress, more and more people began joining Washington’s army. Meanwhile, the British began making plans to gain control of New York. John “Gentleman Johnny” Burgoyne, was the general for the British army. This plan had three separate parts involved to gain control of the state of New York. However, General Burgoyne changed his mind a few times about his plans and the plan failed miserably. The lack of communication with one another between the British is one of the main reasons this plan to gain control of New York failed. France played a very important role in helping America defeat the British at Saratoga. France recognized the United States and traded with them. The differences in opinions cause arguments in today’s world just like they did during the American Revolution. The differences in opinions split families, friends, and neighborhoods the same way it does today. Another similarity between the American Revolution and today’s fight against terror is the job of the military. Just like during the American Revolution, the military’s main job is to protect the people of this country. One difference between the two is that today, you do not see the military men and women in the United States very much. Today, mostly they are serving overseas so that the war does not move to the United States. In other words, the United States is being proactive in protecting our citizens by fighting overseas. Another difference between the American Revolution and todays fight against terror is the training of soldiers and the weapons. Today every soldier goes through extensive training, and each and every soldier gets a weapon. During the American Revolution, America had a hard time paying for the war, and we continue to have that same problem
