Many nurses would prefer to directly deliver all the care their patients need. However, today 's nursing shortage and cost-effective staffing models require RNs to accomplish safe and effective care by delegating some aspects of care to others. The secret to effective delegation is both as simple and as complex as the words the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) uses to define delegation: "Delegation is transferring to a competent individual the authority to perform selected tasks in a selected situation.
