Socioeconomic status refers to an individual’s ability to produce and consume resources (Landsbergis, Grzywacz, & LaMontagne, 2014). It is one of the most important determinants of health and is associated with access to material resources, such as adequate housing, safe neighborhoods, healthy food, clean water, clean air, educational opportunities, and control over ones work (Symbaluk & Bereska, 2016). A lack of these material resources can have a direct or indirect impact on ones health and illness. Socioeconomic status affects an individual’s health and illness through job security, adequate nutritious diet, and has an impact on lifestyle behaviors. Lower socioeconomic status is consistently linked with job insecurity (Landsbergis et al., 2014).…
The difference between living in poverty and not living in poverty is just the the difference between living in the struggle and living a life without debt. The results of socioeconomic status is often measured as a combination of education, income, and occupation, which affects society as a whole due to the inequities of wealth distribution. The economy is divided into social classes, with the bottom classes being the most populated. All the wealth is distributed equally, but due to there being more bottom class individuals and less top class individuals, the bottom class stays in poverty (“Work, Stress, and Health & Socioeconomic Status,” 2016).…
The future of all Americans: It is time for a change 306,000 individuals over the age of 50 are living in the streets (Negaunee, 2016). This statistic is a heartbreaking reality; our elderly are valuable gems that provide great benefits to our society. Wanda Witter is an ungrateful example of the injustice and maltreatment that the elderly face within the social security system in this nation. Julie Turner is an empowering individual creating social awareness and advocating for a social problem affecting this nation. Julie Turner’s ethical stand on the case of Wanda is admirable.…

Poor people are more stressful in every aspect of life, and encounter sickness caused by hopelessness such as diabetes, heart-problem, high blood pressure. (Royce, 2009:…
According to the World Health Organization (2016) poverty leads to bad health because individuals are constrained to environments that put their health at risk including being without decent shelter, clean water and adequate sanitation. Not only does it put them at risk but also due to the financial barriers of poverty these individuals are unable to afford quality health care or fear the cost of health care. For example, if a mother living in poverty with her children has to choose between using her last dollars on food for dinner versus using her last dollars on medication, she will most likely choose the food and ignore her health concern. Not only will her health concern be…
They also had to pay for their employees. That meant he brought home less income and created the financial issue. Therefore, I had to work more hours and also worked for him when he brought work to home. Additionally, I reduced the payment for my son’s child care. We had to downsize everything in financially.…
Money Can’t Buy Happiness but Financial Security Can Despite our nation’s wealth, much of the population is in poverty, due to the fact that minimum wage is not a living wage. While the economy has gotten worse, minimum wage has not been raised since the nineties. The results of poverty on a person’s physical health, psychological health and emotional health were examined in the video, 30 Days Minimum Wage by Morgan Spurlock, in which Spurlock and his fiancée left their life of wealth and luxury to spend thirty days on minimum wage. What Spurlock discovered is not surprising.…
S1- the question I chose was, critically analyse the degree of control individuals have over their health. S2- The determinants of health influence all individuals health positively or negatively. The determinants of health fall under the following categories of factors:…
4). There are many factors which may play a part in the high rates of health conditions in low income individuals. A significant factor is food insecurity. As defined by the Dietitians of Canada, food insecurity is “the inability to acquire or consume an adequate diet quality or sufficient quantity of food in socially acceptable ways, or the uncertainty that one will be able to do so” (Dietitians of Canada, “Food Policy and Food Insecurity,” para. 2). According to Mikkonen and Raphael’s document, The Social Determinants of Health, food insecure homes are 80 per cent more likely to report having diabetes, 60 per cent more likely to report high blood pressure, 70 per cent more likely to report food allergies, and three and a half times more likely to report Major Depression (Mikkonen, J. & Raphael, D., 2010, p. 28).…
Australians generally have good health. But Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders who are economically disadvantaged suffer poor health compared with the rest of the population in Australia. In consideration with this issue, this essay will be discussing the social determinants of health in relation to Alcohol and drug. There is sufficient evidence that some Australian Indigenous communities face major problems associated with the misuse of alcohol and other drugs.…
With social exclusion being defined as the “persistent relative lack of an individual's access to functioning compared with other members of society,” all four dimensions can have significant impacts on health and illness of the communities facing them (Bossert et al, 2007). First, exclusion from adequate income or resources is the dimension that has the most surface level connection to health, as not having the resources to access necessities like food and shelter have such undeniable detrimental impacts on health. Second is labour market exclusion, and with 43% of adults having no paid work, they are at a higher risk of experiencing stressors that impact their health (Gordon et al, 1999). Exclusion from the labour market in a market-based economy can lead to feelings of uselessness and hopelessness, which can impact not only one’s physical wellbeing but mental health as well (Linn, 1985). Third is service exclusion applies to heath for both people facing poverty related and geographically based health inequalities.…
Income inequality has been a progressively growing issue in the United States, even today. The problem dates back all the way to the Great Depression, although some researchers tend to think that it is older than that. The difference between the wealth of higher-income families and lower-income families has become a great issue. Many people, including our government, think that they know how they can fix it. They have tried time and time again to come up with solutions, yet we are still facing the same obstacle that we were almost one hundred years ago.…
The Health Resources and Services Administration defines health disparities as population specific differences in the presence of disease, health outcomes, or even access to healthcare (Health Resources & Services Administration, 2016, para. 1). Age, race or ethnicity, sex, sexual identity, socioeconomic status, disability, and geographic location all contribute to an individual’s ability to achieve good health. Studies have shown that these groups have higher rates of chronic conditions along with higher prevalence of mortality and poorer health outcomes, when compared with other populations. It is important to recognize the impact of these social determinants on health outcomes of these populations. In the film, The American Nurse, we…
My analysis that includes the cross-tabulation and Chi Square Test show that there is a clear relationship between these two variables. The percentages analyzed in the crosstab show that as an individual gets wealthier than their health will benefit. While, the use of the Chi Square test had statistically proved that there is a relationship between wealth and health. Keeping in mind, all this evidence, from literary review to the analysis of the World Studies Survey, there is a clear statistical and socio connection between an individual’s wealth and their…
