Despite our nation’s wealth, much of the population is in poverty, due to the fact that minimum wage is not a living wage. While the economy has gotten worse, minimum wage has not been raised since the nineties. The results of poverty on a person’s physical health, psychological health and emotional health were examined in the video, 30 Days Minimum Wage by Morgan Spurlock, in which Spurlock and his fiancée left their life of wealth and luxury to spend thirty days on minimum wage. What Spurlock discovered is not surprising. In the video, Spurlock had to spend all of his money on rent and surviving day to day and had little to no money left for necessities such as clothing and health. The physical tolls could leave them ill, injured, sleep deprived, and without proper medical care to ensure that they recover. They simply continue to go to work to support themselves and their families. The psychological impact of stress, depression, and anxiety are only fueled by these negative physical impacts. Families are broken apart and relationships are strained by the emotional factors. Minimum wage should be raised to a living wage and health care should be free to ensure the health and safety of the workers of our nation. If a child was born into poverty, they would grow up in it, and due to today’s job market, would likely remain in it. There are so many things that we, as the middle class, take for granted, like our access to health and education, that people don’t have, and the least that our government can do is raise the minimum wage so these people can have a higher quality
