Since she lived in an integrated neighborhood at the time of birth she did not really notice the racial divide that was prominent in that era until her teen years. In fact, when interviewed by a reporter from The New York Times she stated that “When I was in first grade, nobody thought I was inferior. I was the only black in the class and the only child who could read” (?????). What is interesting however is that her father had a “racist attitude towards whites”(??????). Due to many hardships, he faced as a black man he was not fond of whites in general. It is clear that she was influenced by his thought and developed a profound understanding of the hardship and suffering African are subject to in America. Her understanding of these hardship most likely incited her to write the book Beloved, which won the Pulitzer award. Reading this book was as much enjoyment as headache at times. It was very complex and intricate but there is a great joy in unraveling the puzzle little by little and making connections in order to see the big picture.
