This therapy is incredibly valuable and useful in teaching children with AS how to react in situations and to help their motor skills. According to a group of professors at Hacettepe Univeristy, one of whom being Professor Gonca Bumin an occupational therapist with a doctorate in health sciences, a child’s main role is as a playmate; Children learn life experiences through playing with other children (Bumin et al. 172). Therefore, occupational therapy’s main goal when working with children, is to teach them how to play. Professor Gonca Bumin et al explains that “through play, children can gain developmental milestones, learn about occupational role, behaviours, and how to interact safely and appropriately within their environment” (Bumin et al. 172). This quote explains the goals of occupational therapy for a child with a disability. Society has come a long way since ASD and AS were first recognized, but there is still much to learn about ASD and AS. Schools understanding and willingness to give accommodations will help children with AS learn how to live in this world and succeed in not only their academic career, but in their struggle to interact with other people.
