Disastrous consequences may be provoked by discoveries occurring to an individual, and in doing so, results in dangerous consequences, racism and new, negative perceptions of the people associated with the individual. However, this is not always the case and discoveries can also result in positive consequences such as positive renewed perceptions of individuals. Such is depicted through The Tempest (1610) by William Shakespeare, where the individuals are confronted with the discovery of the storm which results in disastrous consequences of fear and danger. Similar to this, in The Blind Side (2009) by John Lee Hancock, Michael Oher is confronted with fear through his discovery of racism, resulting in disastrous consequences such as rejection …show more content…
A medium shot is used when Michael lies down on the couch in his foster parents’ home listening to them argue about him to emphasise the display of vertical shadows on his body, cast by the curtains. The shadows appear to be jail bars, which is symbolic of his loneliness and feelings of entrapment, highlighting the negative discovery of his racist, uncaring foster parents. This emphasises the discovery of racism as it contrasts to the dangerous consequences of the storm in The Tempest. Furthermore, this also symbolises Michael’s urges to escape the situation of his disastrous discovery of loneliness and rejection. The medium long shot used as Michael sits in class on his own highlights the contrast between him and the other students who have partners on their tables. This emphasises the separation between Michael and his class mates as a result of racism. It is clear that confronting discoveries such as racism result in disastrous consequences including rejection and loneliness as Michael has discovered, in contrast to The Tempest where a dangerous discovery of the physical storm was
